First of all I would like to take this time to invite any one reading this…All 3 of you, to visit us at the Dyersburg – Dyer County Photography Club. That’s were I learned to do this by the way. This last Thursday night, we had a guest photographer by the name of Roy Cates. He had an awesome presentation on photographing smoke. I figured I would go head and give it a try since I had most of the equipment needed. What do you need you may ask? Those are secrets we only reveal to photography club members “Just Kidding”.
It’s actually a pretty simple set up. A camera of course, a flash, a black or dark background and a one of those stick incents. You can get 40 at the Dollar Tree for you guessed it, a dollar. It’s a really fun experiment and you never end up with the same picture twice. These were imported into Photoshop and had a hue adjustment to change the color of the smoke then a crop/resize.
This is just my first attempt but I can tell I will be trying this many more times.. plus I got 38 incents left and my small studio smells great.
To learn how to do this and more, come join us at the photography club. We meet every 3rd Thursday of the month at the PDC or the Professional Development Center. The old Dyersburg Middle School or the other side of the YMCA, whatever you want to call it. We have photographers of all skill levels , with all types of cameras, from point and shoot to DSLR. Got a new camera and only know how to shoot if on automatic mode? Have you always wondered what the M, AV and TV mean on that little dial you are too scared to turn? If that’s the case you’d be better served by taking it back and getting a refund. NO, NO, NO, I am just kidding. Bring it to the photography club and we will enlighten you in the ways of force. CAUTION: YOUR RESULTS MAY NOT BE THIS COOL :)
Thanks Mr. Cates for a great class and some inspiration.
